Local building departments are adjusting to the effects of COVID-19 and are limiting the amount of paperwork submitted into their offices. As a response to this trend, the Florida Board of Professional Engineers just approved an emergency rule to help engineers during this time. We will see a big increase in the use of digital and electronically signed and sealed permit documents as building professionals try to move their projects forward, while trying to meet the Florida Statues in all aspects. We think this will be a good short-term test for the building department as they adjust to impacts of the virus. At the end of the day, we hope it leads to long-term changes in the permitting process as it will certainly minimize the waste of paper in our industry.
